Atraverda Limited

Atraverda is an advanced materials company with a truly revolutionary offering that promises to create an environmentally-clean solution to the energy storage requirements of the automotive sector. Already it is in testing with some of the world’s biggest battery manufacturers.

“A hardworking, flexible, skilled workforce, and collaborations with groundbreaking educational institutions, as well as the financial support of the Welsh government have been instrumental in bringing our product to commercial reality.”
Andrew Loyns, Chief Executive Officer, Atraverda

Atraverda is founded on the exceptional properties of its proprietary Ebonex® Technology, a titanium sub-oxide material which has a unique combination of metallic-like electrical conductivity along with the characteristic high corrosion resistance of ceramics.

Much of Atraverda’s work to date has focused on accelerating the adoption of its Ebonex® Technology through a bi-polar lead-acid battery product. Atraverda’s solution, which is in testing with some of the world’s biggest battery manufacturers, is set to provide an environmentally clean solution to the energy storage problem as the bi-polar battery uses significantly less lead than conventional batteries.

The centre’s hi-tech machinery enabled rapid prototyping to prove the design, which was then used as the basis for tooling to enable the injection moulding of plastic parts.

The end result is a revolutionary energy storage device that is smaller, lighter, longer lasting and more reliable than the current standard. This could revolutionize a host of markets - including standby power, mobility, military, telecoms, automotive and the emerging hybrid electric vehicles sector. Ebonex Technology also has the potential to make a real difference within the water and effluent treatment sectors, and for the cathodic protection of concrete.

Their 20,000 sq. ft production facility at Abertillary is now home to 23 full time staff and future growth has been secured by backing from a syndicate of US and UK investors.

Atraverda was attracted to relocate its United Kingdom headquarters to Wales in 2004 - thanks in large part to the support provided by the Welsh Assembly Government. Advice was provided in sourcing a location that fitted the company’s key requirements, but that was only the start. Proximity to a skilled, flexible workforce was a must, and good transport links for them to use were equally important.

Explains Andrew Loyns, their Chief Executive Officer: “Our relocation was a vital decision and one that we had to ensure was right. We had certain criteria that had to be met and indeed exceeded before we could make a commitment.”

“We anticipated the market entry of our Ebonex® Technology would lead to the growth of the company and as such needed a site with adequate space to expand. Thanks to the assistance of the Welsh Assembly Government we were able to meet all our key criteria at our chosen site, Abertillery’s Roseheyworth Business Park.”
